Torrential rains and landslides wreak havoc in Congo, 14 people died due to house collapse

Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the second largest country in the African continent, is vulnerable to floods and landslides. The torrential rain overnight has created havoc in Bukavu city here. According to reports, 14 people died due to landslides and collapse of houses due to torrential rains in Congo’s Bukavu city.

Fear of increasing death toll

In Bukavu commune of Ibanda where many people live in makeshift houses which collapsed due to the rains. At least 14 people died in this accident. Commune Mayor Jean Balek Mugabo gave this information. He said the death toll was expected to rise as many victims remained hospitalized with serious injuries.

General elections in Congo on 20 December

Earlier, 17 people had died in rain-landslide

Earlier in September, torrential rains caused landslides in north-western Congo, killing at least 17 people. The disaster occurred on the banks of the Congo River in the town of Lisle in northwestern Mongala province, according to Mathieu Moll, president of civil society organization Forces Wives.
