Michael Borgschulte, commander of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. The Marine Corps said efforts to recover the remains of the crash victims have begun and the investigation is ongoing. President Joe Biden said he is “disheartened” by the loss of service members. “We offer our deepest condolences to their families, their squadron, and the U.S. Marine Corps as we mourn the loss of five of our nation’s finest warriors,” the president said in a statement.
Many accidents have happened before
“There have been a series of accidents involving U.S. military aircraft over the past year, including the crash of a V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft off the coast of Japan in late November, which killed eight airmen that same month. Five U.S. service members were killed when a helicopter crashed into the Mediterranean Sea during a training exercise in early 2010, while another Osprey crashed in Australia in August, killing three Marines in remote Alaska in April. Three more army personnel were killed and another injured when two helicopters returning from a training mission collided in the area.
