Africa: There are 7 continents in the world. Among these, there is one continent which is mostly surrounded by sea on more than three sides. This is Africa, the island of black people. There is a population of 146 crores in this continent. Most of the people of this continent are extremely poor. However, a big question is arising about this continent, that is whether it has moved beyond the continent? If so then what is the reason? In the year 2018, a picture of a crack was revealed in Kenya, what was it? Know how tectonic plates, earthquakes and other factors are reshaping Africa’s geography.

Africa, one of the seven continents of the world, Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, South America, Australia and Antarctica, is the second largest continent in the world in terms of area and population. It has more than 50 countries and 16 percent of the world’s population resides in this continent. The continent is mostly known for dire poverty and violent conflicts. But this time Africa is being talked about for a different reason. It is being said that Africa is in danger of dividing into two pieces.

Discussion intensified after the rift in Kenya

The debate became more intense after a major crack in Kenya became known in 2018. It was the month of March 2018, when the world saw a strange picture. It became known that a crack is taking shape in the south-western area of Kenya which is increasing with time.

Why is Africa cracking?

This crack actually started forming about 25 million i.e. 25 million years ago. The area from the Red Sea in the north to Mozambique in the south-east of the African continent is in its grip. Earthquake and volcanic activities keep happening continuously in this entire area, which further strengthens the fear of breaking of the continent. Another thing is that earlier it was believed that Africa actually resides on a single tectonic plate, but with time this information has gained strength that the African plate is breaking into two new plates. These plates are Nubian and Somali.

A plate is being pulled towards the east

Many studies have also revealed that the Somali tectonic plate is being pulled towards the east by the Nubian tectonic plate and thus is causing a rift. Additionally, plumes of heat within the Earth’s mantle are forming the lithosphere beneath Kenya and Ethiopia. Due to this, a situation of volcanic eruption is created which expels lava from the emerging cracks like flood water and thus the condition of the cracks keeps increasing further.
