In 2006, a Delhi court had sentenced Shibu Soren to life imprisonment in the 1994 kidnapping and murder case of private secretary Shashi Nath Jha. However, in 2007, the Delhi High Court acquitted him due to lack of concrete evidence. In 2018, the Supreme Court also upheld the decision. Apart from this, in the year 2004, the court of Jamtara Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate had issued a non-bailable warrant against Shibu Soren. Due to this, Soren had to resign from the post of Union Coal Minister in the Manmohan Singh government on 24 July 2004. However, in March 2008, Soren was acquitted by a fast-track court citing lack of evidence.
