68 members including 9 Union ministers will retire from Rajya Sabha, competition among leaders

New Delhi: While Lok Sabha elections are to be held in the year 2024, a large number of seats are going to be vacant in Rajya Sabha also, for which multiplication has started among the political parties. This year, the tenure of 68 Rajya Sabha members including nine Union Ministers is completing. In view of this, competition has started among the leaders of various political parties for a six-year tenure in the Upper House of the Parliament. Out of these 68 vacancies, elections have already been announced for three seats in Delhi. The tenure of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s Sanjay Singh, Narayan Das Gupta and Sushil Kumar Gupta is ending on January 27.

Ashwini Vaishnav, Dharmendra Pradhan are also retiring

Elections have also been announced for the lone Rajya Sabha seat in Sikkim where Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) member Hishe Lachungpa is retiring on February 23. The tenure of 57 leaders including Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav, Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is completing in the month of April. Maximum 10 seats are becoming vacant in Uttar Pradesh. After this, six each in Maharashtra and Bihar, five each in Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal, four each in Karnataka and Gujarat, three each in Odisha, Telangana, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, two each in Jharkhand and Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. One seat each is to be vacant in Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Chhattisgarh. The four nominated members are retiring in July. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President JP Nadda is currently a member of the Rajya Sabha from Himachal Pradesh. But for re-nomination he will have to look for a seat outside his home state as Congress is now in power there. The Congress is expected to send its candidates to the upper house of Parliament from Karnataka and Telangana, where it came to power last year.

Prakash Javadekar, V Muraleedharan are also retiring

Other members whose tenure is ending include Biju Janata Dal (BJD)’s Prashant Nanda and Amar Patnaik (Odisha), BJP chief spokesperson Anil Baluni (Uttarakhand) and Fisheries Minister Purushottam Rupala, Congress’s Naranbhai Rathwa and Ami Yagnik ( All Gujarat) are also included. Apart from these, Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan, Union Minister Narayan Rane, former Union Minister Prakash Javadekar, Kumar Ketkar of Congress, Vandana Chavan of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Anil Desai of Shiv Sena (UBT) are retiring from Maharashtra. In view of the changed developments in Maharashtra after the split between NCP and Shiv Shiv Sena, all eyes will be on the Rajya Sabha elections there. Dharmendra Pradhan from Madhya Pradesh, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan, Ajay Pratap Singh and Kailash Soni (all BJP) and Congress’ Rajmani Patel are retiring from the Upper House. From Karnataka, the terms of BJP’s Rajiv Chandrashekhar and Congress’s L Hanumanthaiah, GC Chandrashekhar and Syed Nasir Hussain are ending. Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS)’s Joginipally Santosh Kumar, Ravichandra Vaddiraju and B Lingaiah Yadav are the retiring members from Telangana. The Congress, which is in power in Telangana, can expect the state to send at least two of its candidates to the Rajya Sabha.

Sushil Modi, Manoj Jha’s tenure is also ending

From West Bengal, Trinamool Congress members Abir Ranjan Biswas, Subhashish Chakraborty, Mohammad Nadimul Haq and Shantanu Sen and Congress member Abhishek Manu Singhvi are retiring. From Bihar, the terms of RJD’s Manoj Kumar Jha and Ahmed Ashfaq Karim, JD(U) members Anil Prasad Hegde and Bashishtha Narayan Singh, BJP’s Sushil Kumar Modi and Congress member Akhilesh Prasad Singh are completing. The members who retired from Uttar Pradesh include BJP’s Anil Agarwal, Ashok Bajpai, Anil Jain, Kanta Kardam, Sakaldeep Rajbhar, GVL Narasimha Rao, Vijay Pal Singh Tomar, Sudhanshu Trivedi and Harnath Singh Yadav and Samajwadi Party’s Jaya Bachchan. From Andhra Pradesh, TDP’s Kanakamedala Ravindra Kumar, BJP’s CM Ramesh and YSR Congress’s Prabhakar Reddy Vemireddy are retiring from the Rajya Sabha. BJP’s Saroj Pandey and DP Vats are retiring from Chhattisgarh and Haryana respectively. In Jharkhand, BJP’s Sameer Oraon and Congress’s Dheeraj Prasad Sahu are retiring from the Upper House of Parliament in May. In Kerala, CPI(M)’s Ilamaram Kareem, CPI’s Binay Viswam and Kerala Congress (M)’s Jose K Mani are retiring in July. The nominated members who are set to retire in July include BJP’s Mahesh Jethmalani, Sonal Mansingh, Ram Sakal and Rakesh Sinha. (input language)
