West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government of trying to saffronise various institutions across the country, including the Indian cricket team. Speaking at the beginning of Jagaddhatri Puja at the poppy market in central Kolkata, Mamata Banerjee said that the BJP has added saffron color not only to the jerseys of the cricket team but also to the paintings of metro stations.

Please note that the practice jersey of the Indian cricket team is now saffron in colour. Regarding this, Mamata Banerjee, on the occasion of Jagaddhatri Puja in the poppy market of central Kolkata, accused BJP that not only the jersey of the cricket team but also the metro stations have been painted in saffron colour.

Expressing his disagreement, he said, “They are trying to paint the entire country in saffron color. We are proud of our players and I am confident that they will win in the World Cup, but they (BJP) have brought saffron color there too. And our boys now practice in saffron colored jerseys. Even metro stations have been painted saffron. We do not accept this.” Taking a dig at the BJP, Mamata said the nation “belongs to the people of the country and not to the people of just one party.”
BJP also retaliated
BJP has also retaliated on his comment. BJP leader Rahul Sinha said, “After a few days she may question why our national flag (tricolour) has saffron colour. We do not consider it appropriate to even react to such statements.” It is noteworthy that this statement of Mamata Banerjee regarding Team India’s jersey has come at a time when the Indian cricket team has reached the final of the World Cup and now it will face Australia in the final match on 19th November at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
