Relief news has come out regarding former Indian marines lodged in Qatar jail. According to reports, India’s appeal against the death sentence awarded to former Indian Navy officers has been accepted. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi recently said that the Indian Embassy has received another consular access to the detained Indians. He has said that India will continue to provide all legal and consular support to the citizens.

Last month, 8 former Indian marines were given death sentence by a Qatar court. These citizens of India were lodged in Qatar jail for the last one year. The Government of India had expressed shock at the announcement of death sentence by the Qatari court and pledged to explore all available legal options to ensure the release of its citizens.

What is the allegation?

Eight former officers of the Indian Navy were arrested in Qatar in August last year. According to media reports, these officers were working with Al Dahra, a private company of Qatar. These Indian nationals were allegedly arrested in a case of espionage. So far neither Qatari authorities nor New Delhi have made public the charges against the Indian nationals.

According to the report, all these former officers have served in the Navy for 20 years and their tenure was impeccable. These officers had worked on many important posts in the Navy including trainers.
