Former Indian Navy personnel facing death penalty on alleged spying charges in Qatar have got a big relief. According to the information given by the Ministry of External Affairs, the death sentence of 8 Indian people has been commuted. Let us tell you that last October, a Qatari court had sentenced death to 8 former Indian Navy personnel who were kept in custody for more than a year.

Foreign Ministry gave update

Information in this matter was given by the Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday. The ministry wrote – “We have noted today’s decision of the Court of Appeal of Qatar in the Dahra Global case, in which the sentences have been reduced, the detailed decision is awaited. Our Ambassador to Qatar and other officials will join the family in the Court of Appeal. “We have stood by them since the beginning of the case and will continue to provide all consular and legal assistance. We will also continue to raise this matter with the Qatari authorities.”

What is the whole matter?

Eight former officers of the Indian Navy were arrested in Qatar in August last year. According to media reports, these officers were working with Al Dahra, a private company of Qatar. These Indian nationals were allegedly arrested in a case of espionage. So far neither Qatari authorities nor New Delhi have made public the charges against the Indian nationals.

India had expressed surprise at the punishment

The Indian government had expressed shock at the Qatari court’s announcement of death sentence to the former marines and pledged to explore all available legal options to ensure the release of its citizens. According to the report, all these former officers have served in the Navy for 20 years and their tenure was impeccable. These officers had worked on many important posts in the Navy including trainers.
