Dehradun: Egas was celebrated with full enthusiasm in the presence of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Wednesday to celebrate the safe coming out of 41 laborers trapped in the Silkyara Tunnel of Uttarakhand. Eegas or Budhi Diwali is celebrated 10 days after Diwali in Uttarakhand. However, the Chief Minister did not celebrate the festival due to the tunnel accident on Diwali day and subsequent efforts not being completed to rescue the trapped workers from the tunnel. The relatives of the workers who came out of the Silkyara tunnel also participated in the Egas which was celebrated with great enthusiasm late in the evening at the Chief Minister’s residence.

On this occasion, the Chief Minister garlanded the family members of the laborers and also honored them by covering them with a shawl. During this period, cultural programs were also organized through which the families of the laborers got acquainted with the folk culture of the state. Some family members also took part in cultural dance and celebrated the safe return of their loved ones. The Chief Minister said that due to the tunnel accident, we all could not celebrate Diwali this time and after all the workers were safely evacuated, Diwali and Egas were celebrated today.

‘Today is the festival of Egas for us’

CM Dhami said, ‘Today is the festival of Egas for us because our labor brothers have come out safely and are healthy.’ On this occasion, the Chief Minister also appreciated the courage of the workers and the patience of their families while they were stuck in the tunnel. During the cultural program, the Chief Minister played ‘Bhelu’ (setting fire to a bundle of wood and rotating it with a rope) and celebrated the Egas festival by performing folk dance and wished all the people of the state for the festival. Dhami attributed the success of the rescue operation to the promptness of the rescue teams, the support of technology, the vitality of the workers trapped inside the tunnel, the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the grace of Boukhnag God.

‘I was as happy as my family’

The Chief Minister said that this occasion is a matter of great joy for him. He said that he is equally happy as the labor brothers and their families are. Earlier, the Chief Minister had decided not to celebrate the festival of Egas on November 23 and had canceled the program organized in this regard at his residence. When a part of the 4.5 km long tunnel being built on the Chardham Yatra route collapsed on November 12, workers were trapped on the other side of the debris, who were rescued safely on Tuesday night after a rescue operation conducted on a war footing.
