Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced cash assistance of Rs 6,000 each to the people affected by the ‘Migjom’ storm in the state. He also announced on Saturday to increase the relief amount in various categories including compensation for crop failure. According to the official release issued by the government, this assistance will be given to those whose income has been affected due to the cyclone. The government will provide this assistance in the form of cash at ration shops. The Chief Minister has also written a letter to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman demanding relief for the MSME sector.

‘Power supply has been restored’

In his letter to the Union Finance Minister, the Chief Minister said that around 5000 MSME units in the 4 affected districts are stalled as both raw materials and manufactured products have been spoiled due to incessant rains. According to a government release issued in Chennai, Stalin told Sitharaman that power supply has been restored and roads have been repaired but it will take time for production to resume. Cyclonic storm ‘Migzom’ caused torrential rains in Chennai and adjoining districts of Chengalpet, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur on 3 and 4 December, causing floods and loss of life and property.

CM increased compensation under many items

Following the Chief Minister’s announcement, a high-level meeting was held under his chairmanship at the Secretariat, in which the damage caused by the floods and the relief provided to the affected people was reviewed. According to a release, CM Stalin has ordered to increase the compensation for rain-affected crops (33 per cent and above) including paddy from Rs 13,500 per hectare to Rs 17,000. Whereas, if perennial crops and trees have been affected then the compensation per hectare will be increased from Rs 18,000 to Rs 22,500 per hectare. Compensation for rain-fed crops will be increased from Rs 7,410 per hectare to Rs 8,500.

Compensation increased even after killing of cows and bulls

According to the release, the amount of assistance given to the families of those who lost their lives in rain-related incidents due to the cyclone will be increased from Rs 4 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. The Government has prepared a category-wise framework to provide assistance in case of damage to boats and fishing nets. According to this, the maximum subsidy for damaged mechanized boats has been increased from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 7.50 lakh. Compensation for killing of cattle including cows and bulls will be increased from Rs 30,000 to Rs 37,500. Compensation for goat breeds like ‘Veladu’ and ‘Semmari Aadu’ will be increased from Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,000.

Government distributed millions of food packets

The assistance for damaged huts will now increase from Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000. The government said that 47 lakh food packets have been distributed in Chennai district alone till December 8 due to the rains triggered by the cyclonic storm. Overall, 51 lakh food packets were provided to people in Chennai, Chengalpet, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts. Apart from bread and biscuit packets, more than 58,000 kg of milk powder and about 10 lakh drinking water bottles were distributed. The DMK government has faced criticism from main opposition parties AIADMK and BJP over its handling of the situation arising due to rains and floods.
