HD Kumaraswamy accused of electricity theft
Bengaluru: The Congress in Karnataka on Tuesday accused former Chief Minister and JDS state chief HD Kumaraswamy of illegally taking electricity to illuminate his JP Nagar residence with decorative lights during Diwali. The ruling party posted a video on social media platform X along with a statement criticizing JD(S) leader and son of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda. HD Kumaraswamy said that it was not his mistake but the mistake of a private decorator who gave a direct connection to a nearby electric pole. He told that when he came to know about it, he immediately got it removed and took the electricity connection from the meter board of the house.
The Congress took a dig at him, saying, “The JP Nagar residence of HD Kumaraswamy, the world’s only honest man, was illuminated with decorative lights with illegal electricity connections directly from the electric poles. It is a tragedy that a former Chief Minister was denied electricity.” Had to face so much poverty just to steal!”

Kumaraswamy said- I will pay the fine
Taking a dig at HD Kumaraswamy, the party said the Congress government’s ‘Griha Jyoti’ scheme gives 200 units of free electricity per month for residential connections, and not 2,000 units. HD Kumaraswamy said, “I am sorry for this indiscretion. Let BESCOM (Bangalore electricity supply company) officials come and inspect and issue a notice, I will pay the fine.” He targeted Congress for making a ‘small issue’ a big issue. HD Kumaraswamy said, “I have neither embezzled any state property, nor grabbed anyone’s land. I do not have such a thirst for wealth that it can be quenched with someone’s blood.”

Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said that BESCOM will take action. He said he did not know whether any case would be registered against HD Kumaraswamy or not. Earlier, Congress had tauntedly said, “If you were so poverty stricken then you should have applied for the Griha Jyoti Yojana. Hey, you didn’t know that only one electricity meter is allowed under the Griha Jyoti Yojana.” Whereas you have many meters here.”
“Despite the shortage of electricity in the state, we took measures to provide seven hours of electricity to the farmers; Are you struggling with such a “drought” that you resort to such cheap theft? Didn’t you say in a press conference that Karnataka is in darkness? “And now you have lit your house with stolen electricity?”
The party questioned why he was saying that Karnataka was in darkness when his house was glowing with decorative lights! “To ask a question in your style – Do you need to light your house when the state is facing drought? Do you want to enjoy power theft for farmers? Do you want ‘Diwali’ (Referring to bankruptcy in Kannada) How many people are there in your house for ‘Deepawali Utsav’?” Congress asked.
