Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan has taken major action against the Vice Chancellor of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University in Wayanad. According to reports, the Governor has summoned its Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. M.R. in connection with the recent death of a student of the university. Sashindran was suspended on Saturday. Khan said in the suspension order that the report submitted by Professor Sashindran is “evidence of gross dereliction of duty on the part of the Vice-Chancellor” during the events leading to the death of 20-year-old Siddharthan on February 18.

The student was found dead in the bathroom on February 18.

Governor Khan said, ‘In the backdrop of this unfortunate incident, the indifferent, careless and insensitive attitude of the Vice Chancellor towards his duties and responsibilities is exposed by the report of February 28.’ He also ordered a judicial inquiry into the student’s death. The Governor suggested conducting an investigation by a sitting or retired judge of the High Court or Supreme Court. He said, ‘Appropriate request will be made to the Registrar General of Kerala High Court.’ A second year graduate student of the Faculty of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry was found hanging in the bathroom of his hostel on February 18.

SFI leaders accused of assaulting student

The student’s parents have claimed that some of his other classmates studying in the college have told them that some local leaders and workers of the Students Federation of India (SFI) had beaten up their son. The student’s father said that according to the postmortem report, his son had injury marks on his body and his stomach was empty, which showed that he was beaten badly and was not allowed to eat food. The police had earlier registered a case of unnatural death in this matter.

11 people have been arrested so far in the case

Police later booked 12 students for various offenses including abetment of suicide and voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or instruments under the IPC and Kerala Prohibition of Ragging Act. Later the number of accused increased to 18. Till Friday evening, 11 people had been arrested in this case. Following the claims by the student’s parents, Congress and BJP accused SFI, the student wing of the ruling Marxist Communist Party (CPM), of lynching the student. At the same time, SFI has denied these allegations.
