How Swami Vivekananda became a monk

Swami Vivekananda Jayanti 2024: Today is the birth anniversary of India’s great spiritual guru and biggest youth icon Swami Vivekananda. Swamiji, born on 12 January 1863 in Kolkata, is a source of inspiration for crores of youth. His thoughts and passionate speeches always influence the youth. Swamiji’s childhood name was Narendra Nath Dutt. Almost everyone knows this. But do you know whose name this name is? Actually, Raja Ajit Singh of Khetri of Rajasthan had given him the name of Swami Vivekananda. Swami ji asked Ajit Singh which name he liked. On this Ajit Singh said that it should be Vivekananda. Let us tell you that when Swamiji was going to participate in the Chicago Religion Conference, the attire he wore was also given to him by Raja Ajit Singh.

Vivekananda’s studies

Swami Vivekananda was born in a Kayastha family of Calcutta. His childhood name was Narendranath Dutt. His father Vishwanath Dutt was a lawyer in the Calcutta High Court and his mother Bhuvaneshwari Devi was a woman with religious views. Swami Vivekananda was good in studies since childhood. He was interested in studies. After going to school in the year 1871 at the age of 8, he took admission in the Presidency College in 1879. He got first position in this examination.

When and how did Vivekananda become a monk?

Vivekananda’s guru was Ramakrishna Paramhansa. Both of them met for the first time in the year 1881 at Dakshineswar Kali Temple in Calcutta. Actually, Ramakrishna Paramhansa used to worship Goddess Kali in this temple. During this time both of them met for the first time. On meeting Ramakrishna Paramahansa, Swami Vivekananda asked him whether he had seen God. Then Paramhansa laughingly replied that yes, I have seen it. I see God as clearly as I can see you. The only difference is that I can feel them more deeply than you. Influenced by Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, at the age of just 25, he gave up everything and became a monk.

Chicago Conference of Religions

In the year 1893, the World Religion Conference was organized in Chicago. People from all over the world made various types of preparations for this event. During this time Swami Vivekananda also reached there. When Vivekananda came on stage dressed in simple clothes, the whole hall was silent. He starts his speech with the words brothers and sisters of America. As soon as this was heard, applause started ringing in the entire hall. After completing his speech, when he started leaving the stage, people applauded a lot. In one night the whole of America came to know that an Indian monk had come to America and left after convincing the people.
