You will be punished for changing the name of a place.

Imphal:The Manipur Assembly has passed a bill to make changing the name of places without the approval of the competent authority a punishable offence. Chief Minister N. Biren Singh had introduced the ‘Manipur Name of Places by MLA, 2024’ in the Assembly on Monday and it was passed unanimously in the House. On this occasion, the CM said that such incidents have come to light earlier also, but they cannot be taken lightly.

CM N Biren Singh gave this information by posting on ‘X’ after the bill was passed. He said in his post that “Manipur state government is serious about protecting our history, cultural heritage and heritage passed down from our ancestors.” He said that “We do not tolerate renaming of places and their names without consent. Abuse will not be tolerated and those guilty of this crime will be given strict legal punishment.

According to the Bill, those found guilty of changing the name of villages/places without the consent of the government can be punished with a maximum jail term of 3 years and a fine of up to Rs 3 lakh. The Chief Minister had said in the Assembly on Monday that “such incidents have taken place in which Churachandpur has been called Lamka and Kangpokpi has been called Kangui, this cannot be taken lightly.” CM N Biren Singh said that the state government has taken action against the places/ All the new names given to the villages have already been cancelled.

People who came illegally from Myanmar

Meanwhile, CM Biren Singh said in the Assembly that from May 3, 2023 to February 27, 6,746 illegal citizens of Myanmar have been detected in the state. The chief minister said 259 Myanmar nationals were sent back to their native places after biometric data collection, while the rest are being kept in temporary shelters to prevent them from mixing with the general public. Singh informed the House that a conciliation team has been set up under the chairmanship of D Gangmei of the Hill Area Committee to initiate talks with the MLAs who did not attend the session.
