The Election Commission (ECI) has asked states to ensure that officers who are transferred from a district as per its policy before elections are not appointed to any district in the same parliamentary constituency. By changing its policy of transferring officials before elections, the Election Commission has tried to plug the loopholes which were being exploited by state governments. Let us inform that this step has been taken by the Election Authority after paying ‘serious attention’ to the cases in which the state governments had transferred officers to the districts near the same parliamentary constituency.

Why did the Election Commission take this step?

As per the policy of the Election Commission, all officers who were either posted in their home district or have completed three years at the same place, are transferred before the Lok Sabha or Assembly elections to ensure that they do not work for any candidate. Or do not obstruct the level playing field in favor of the party. “The Commission has strengthened its existing transfer policy to ensure that officials do not create obstacles to level playing field in elections,” the Commission said in a statement on Saturday.

Election Commissioner said- policy should be followed, not show off

The Commission said, “While removing the loopholes in the existing instructions, the Commission has directed that all States, except States and Union Territories having two parliamentary constituencies, shall ensure that the appointment of officers who have been transferred out of the district It should not be done in the same parliamentary constituency.” The Election Commission, led by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, has told the states that the policy should be followed and it should not be just a show.
