Karnataka unit president of Congress and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is trying to woo his party leaders and MLAs. He indicated that he too is not sitting silent and many BJP leaders are in touch with him. Let us tell you that former Chief Minister of Karnataka Jagadish Shettar had left Congress and joined BJP again a day earlier. Last year, BJP did not give him a ticket in the assembly elections, after which Shettar joined Congress.

“I am also in touch with him…”

But today Shivkumar accused BJP of making every possible effort to include Congress leaders in the party. He told reporters in Bengaluru, “I am talking to many (BJP) leaders, many people are looking at us, I do not want to reveal their names.” And regarding his claim of being in touch with the MLAs, Shivakumar said, “Don’t they know that I am also in touch with them?” Have they abandoned me? Should I read the list? Let’s not do that right now.”

Shivakumar targeted Shettar

Shivakumar said Shettar had joined the Congress unconditionally after accusing the BJP of insulting and misbehaving with him. He said that considering him (Shettar) a senior leader, the Congress gave him a ticket to contest the Assembly elections and despite him losing the election by a margin of about 35,000 votes, the party made him a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC). Deputy CM Shivakumar said, “Instead of not giving a ticket to a loyal party worker, we gave him (Shettar) a ticket and treated him with respect. We were aware that BJP leaders were contacting him for the last two-three months and he kept saying that he would not leave the party. I had talked to him the day before yesterday, but suddenly he announced to leave the party.

“No one can do any harm to Congress”

Congress leader Shivakumar said that even though Shettar has left the party, Congress is like an ocean. He said that hundreds of people can come to the party and hundreds can leave, but no one can do any harm to the Congress. He said, “We have won 136 seats in the assembly elections on our own strength.” We might have lost seven to eight seats due to our mistakes, otherwise our seat count would have been more than 141.

“Party workers happy with his exit”

Shivakumar said that Shettar’s exit from the Congress might “only give the party one day of embarrassment in front of the media, but party workers are happy with his exit as it will help them organize the Congress better.” Shivkumar also said that Congress MLA Laxman Savadi has assured that he will remain in the Congress and work for the party.
