Kiren Rijiju meets Maldives President, emphasizes on bilateral relations

Male: Union Minister Kiren Rijiju met the newly appointed President of Maldives, Dr. Mohammed Muizzu in his office. Kiren Rijiju expressed his good wishes to the President, representing the sentiments of the Government and the people of India. He expressed his desire to promote constructive relations with Maldives.

Request to recall new personnel

At the meeting, President Muizzu formally requested the Indian government to withdraw its military personnel from Maldives. The President said that the people of Maldives had given him a strong mandate to request India in the presidential elections held in September and expressed hope that India would respect the democratic will of the people of Maldives.

Discussion on projects going on in collaboration with India

Discussing the matter with Minister Kiren Rijiju, President Dr Muizzu also highlighted the important role of the two Indian helicopters in many emergency medical situations. President Dr. Muizzu and Minister Kiren Rijiju also reviewed the progress of implementation of various projects in Maldives with India’s cooperation. The President stressed the importance of expediting the Greater Male Connectivity Project (GMCP), highlighting the importance of addressing and overcoming issues delaying the project.

Rijiju happy to meet President Muizzu

After the meeting, Rijiju said on ‘X’, “Pleased to meet President Dr. Mohammad Muizzu. On behalf of Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he congratulated him and reiterated India’s commitment to further strengthen bilateral cooperation and people-to-people ties between the two countries.

Muizzoo is a close aide of former Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen. Yameen established close ties with China during his tenure as president from 2013 to 2018. Muizzu had defeated his predecessor Ibrahim Mohammad Solih, who was pro-India, in the elections held in September. Rijiju also took stock of the 4,000-house housing project, which is being jointly built by Government of India unit NBCC, Exim Bank of India and a private company. The project, which provides affordable housing, has been partnered with the Government of Maldives. (PTI)
