Congress leader Rajiv Gandhi represented the constituency from the Amethi seat until 1991, when Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). The by-election for the Amethi seat held in the same year was won by Satish Sharma of the Congress. achieved. ​​Satish Verma won again in 1996 and then in the 1998 elections, Sanjay Singh of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) defeated Sharma. Then late Rajiv Gandhi’s wife, Sonia Gandhi, continuously won the elections from this constituency from 1999 to 2004. After that Sonia and Rajiv’s son, Rahul Gandhi, won from Amethi seat in 2004 but Rahul Gandhi was defeated by BJP’s Smriti Irani in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

According to Election Commission data, there were 17,43,515 voters in the Amethi constituency during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Of these, 9,24,563 voters were male and 8,18,812 were female voters. 140 voters belonged to the third gender. There were 1,472 postal votes in the constituency. The number of service voters in Amethi in 2019 was 2,482 (2,390 were males and 92 were females).
