Amethi Lok Sabha Elections 2024

There are 80 Lok Sabha seats in Amethi. This constituency was created in the year 1967. Its first MP was Vidyadhar Bajpai of Congress, who was elected in 1967 and won his seat in the next election in 1971. In the 1977 general election, Ravindra Pratap Singh of the Janata Party won from this seat and became the MP of Amethi. Then in 1980, Ravindra Pratap Singh was defeated by Sanjay Gandhi of Congress. Later that year, Sanjay Gandhi died in a plane crash, leading to a by-election for the seat in 1981, which was won by Sanjay Gandhi’s brother Rajiv Gandhi.

Amethi is the traditional seat of Congress

Congress leader Rajiv Gandhi represented the constituency from the Amethi seat until 1991, when Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). The by-election for the Amethi seat held in the same year was won by Satish Sharma of the Congress. achieved. ​​Satish Verma won again in 1996 and then in the 1998 elections, Sanjay Singh of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) defeated Sharma. Then late Rajiv Gandhi’s wife, Sonia Gandhi, continuously won the elections from this constituency from 1999 to 2004. After that Sonia and Rajiv’s son, Rahul Gandhi, won from Amethi seat in 2004 but Rahul Gandhi was defeated by BJP’s Smriti Irani in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

According to Election Commission data, there were 17,43,515 voters in the Amethi constituency during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
