The four astronauts of Gaganyaan mission
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced the names of four astronauts who are undergoing training for the country’s first human space flight mission – ‘Gaganyaan’. Modi visited the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC) at Thumba near Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday. During this, he inaugurated three major space infrastructure projects of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). He told in VSSC that Group Captain Prashant Balakrishnan Nair, Angad Pratap and Ajit Krishnan and Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla are the astronauts nominated for the Gaganyaan mission. He awarded ‘astronaut wings’ to all four of them.

1. Astronaut Prashant Balakrishnan Nair
Prashant Nair’s full name is Prashant Balakrishnan Nair, he is a resident of Nenmara, Palakkad, Kerala. He has been trained for human space flight missions in Russia. He is a CAT A flying instructor and test pilot. He has approximately 3000 hours of flying experience. He has flown aircraft like Su-30 MKI, MiG-21, MiG-29, Hawk, Dornier, An-32 etc. He has also commanded a major fighter aircraft Su-30 Sqn. Serving as Group Captain in Prashant Air Force.
2. Astronaut Ajit Krishnan
Astronaut Ajit Krishnan is a test pilot of the Air Force. Like Prashant Balakrishnan, he is also working as a Group Captain in the Air Force. Ajit Krishnan was born on 19 April 1982 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He is an alumnus of NDA. The Air Force Academy also receives the Gold Medal and Sword of Honor from the President. He is a flying instructor and test pilot. He has approximately 2900 hours of flying experience. He has flown many aircraft like Su-30 MKI, MiG-21, MiG-21, Mig-29, Jaguar, Dornier, An-32. He is also an alumnus of DSSC, Wellington.
3. Astronaut Angad Pratap
Astronaut Angad Pratap of Mission Gaganyaan is also a fighter and test pilot in the Air Force. He is also serving as Group Captain. Angad Pratap was born on 17 July 1982 in Prayagraj. He is an alumnus of NDA. On 18 December 2004, he was inducted into the fighter stream of the Air Force. He has approximately 2000 hours of experience as a flying instructor and test pilot. Angad has flown aircraft and fighter jets like Sukhoi-30MKI, MiG-21, MiG-29, Jaguar, Hawk, Dornier and An-32.
4. Astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla
Astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla is serving as Wing Commander in the Air Force. How many pilots were tested for the Gaganyaan mission, out of which Shubhanshu Shukla was selected along with three others. Born on 10 October 1985 in Lucknow, Shubhanshu received military training in NDA. He was inducted into the fighter stream of the Air Force on 17 June 2006. He is a fighter combat leader, as well as a test pilot. He has 2000 hours of flying experience. He has flown aircraft and fighter jets like Sukhoi-30MKI, MiG-21, MiG-29, Jaguar, Hawk, Dornier, An-32.
