Thousands of women faced crime in the year 2023, Women Commission gave information about complaints.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) received 28,811 complaints of crimes against women last year and about 55 per cent of these were from Uttar Pradesh. According to NCW data, the highest number of complaints were received in the right to dignity category, which includes harassment other than domestic violence. The number of such complaints was 8,540. After this, 6,274 complaints of domestic violence were received. The data said 4,797 complaints of dowry harassment, 2,349 of molestation, 1,618 of police apathy towards women and 1,537 of rape and attempted rape were received.

How many crimes took place against women in the year 2023?

According to the commission, 805 complaints of sexual harassment, 605 of cyber crimes, 472 of stalking and 409 complaints of honor crimes were registered. The highest number of 16,109 complaints were received from Uttar Pradesh, followed by 2,411 from Delhi and 1,343 from Maharashtra, the data said. There has been a decline in the number of complaints since the year 2022 when 30,864 complaints were received which was the highest figure since 2014.
