The Supreme Court is hearing a petition filed by woman officer Priyanka Tyagi who has sought grant of permanent commission to eligible women ‘Short Service Commission’ (SSC) officers in the Coast Guard. You don’t want to see the faces of women in the Coast Guard?

The Supreme Court bench asked whether the Center was still adopting a ‘patriarchal attitude’ despite the apex court’s decisions granting permanent commission to women in the three armed forces – Army, Air Force and Navy. The bench asked Additional Solicitor General Vikramjit Banerjee, appearing for the Coast Guard, ‘Why are you being so paternalistic? Don’t you want to see the faces of women in the Coast Guard?’

Coast Guard should bring permanent commission policy for women – Supreme Court

The apex court bench noted that the petitioner is the only SSC woman officer opting for permanent commission, and questioned why her case was not considered. The Supreme Court said, ‘Now, the Coast Guard must come up with a policy.’ The bench also asked whether there is a provision for permanent commission for women in the Coast Guard. When told that women officers can be given 10 per cent permanent commission, the bench asked, ‘Why 10 per cent, are women inferior human beings?’ The court asked why the Coast Guard is not giving them permanent commission when there is a provision in the Indian Navy. She asked the Center to bring a gender-neutral policy on the issue. (input language)
