Gujarat Kite Festival
In India, the festival of Makar Sankranti is called by different names in different places. In Gujarat it is called Uttarayan. There is amazing splendor here on 14th January, the day of Makar Sankranti. It seems as if the entire state comes to the rooftops. A special kite festival is organized in Gujarat on the day of Uttarayan. Every year the International Kite Festival (International Kite Festival 2024) is organized here. Where kite lovers and kite makers come from all over the country and abroad. It seems as if the entire earth is offering flowers in the form of kites on this festival in honor of the sky and in worship of the Sun. There is fragrance of kites in this festival. When the Sun reaches Uttarayan, winter starts turning into summer, which is known as Makar Sankranti or Uttarayan. On the day of Uttarayan, people in most of the cities of Gujarat start kite flying right from the morning. The sky is filled with colorful kites from early morning till dark at night. This day usually has bright hot sunshine and strong winds blow to keep the kites aloft. In all the states of Gujarat everyone comes to the rooftops and streets to fly kites and compete with their neighbors. Laddu, Undhiyu or Surti Jamun are famous dishes eaten during kite flying. People fly kites together with friends, relatives and neighbors.
Kite festival is celebrated every year
Since 1989, the city of Ahmedabad has been organizing the International Kite Festival as an official celebration of Uttarayan. Here master kite makers and fliers from all over the world showcase their unique kites. Such kites can be seen here which you would not have seen anywhere else. In the last few years, people have also seen flying dragons in Malaysia, Indonesia, America, Japan and China. Here special kite makers of Ahmedabad also exhibit their kites.
