Pongal 2023: This festival is not celebrated without Pongal Panai, know its special recipe

Pongal 2023: Pongal is on 15th January. This festival is considered the festival of new crops. Sugarcane, jaggery, milk, rice and pulses are given special importance in this festival. In this festival, people decorate their houses with rangoli of flowers, wear traditional silk clothes, clean the house, light a bonfire in the evening and celebrate this festival by singing songs around it. In this festival, domestic animals are also worshiped in a special way and offered to them. Apart from all this, a special recipe is made on this festival which is called Pongal Paanai.

What is Pongal Paanai?

On the day of Pongal, people buy new earthen pots, make beautiful figures on them and decorate them with mango and turmeric leaves and other flowers. After this, they keep this vessel in front of the house and make Prasad in it. To make this Prasad, rice, pulses, milk and jaggery are cooked together and as soon as the dish starts boiling and starts flowing out of the vessel, that time is celebrated as – ‘Pongalo Pongal’. Boiling and spilling of milk is considered a symbol of prosperity and abundance and is especially done.

To make Pongal Panai, first soak new rice in water. Then add 1 bowl of moong and half cup of gram dal in the fry pan and fry. Then keep it soaked with rice. Then pour milk in an earthen pot and let it boil. When the milk boils and boils, add rice and pulses to it and cook.

When it is cooked, add jaggery on top and cook till it melts. Add dry fruits and cardamom on top. Now cook well and turn off the gas. In this way your Pongal Panai is ready. Serve it in banana leaves as Prasad and celebrate the festival of Pongal with joy.
