Dhanvantari, god of Ayurveda
The festival of Dhanteras is celebrated on Trayodashi, 2 days before Diwali. On this day, people worship Goddess Lakshmi, Kubera and Dhanvantari, the god of health, at home. On Dhanteras, people buy such things which bring blessings to the house and keep the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi. It is considered auspicious to buy metal, broom, betel leaves, salt and coriander on this day. There is a special story behind worshiping Dhanvantari on this day.
Who was Dhanvantari God?
According to religious texts and mythology, God Dhanvantari appeared from the churning of the ocean. He is considered the founder of Ayurveda and the god of medicine. Dhanvantari brings health in your life. There is a religious belief that by worshiping Dhanvantari, one gets relief from diseases and attains health.
Why is Dhanvantari Dev worshiped on Dhanteras?
According to mythology, when the ocean was being churned, fourteen gems were found one by one. In the churning of the ocean, nectar came out last. It is said that Lord Dhanvantari came out of the sea carrying this Kalash. Lord Dhanvantari appeared with the nectar pot on Trayodashi of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. Therefore, Dhanvantari deity is worshiped on Dhanteras.
