The festival of Dhanteras is celebrated on Trayodashi, 2 days before Diwali. On this day, people worship Goddess Lakshmi, Kubera and Dhanvantari, the god of health, at home. According to mythology, when the ocean was being churned, fourteen gems were found one by one. In the churning of the ocean, nectar came out last. It is said that Lord Dhanvantari came out of the sea carrying this Kalash. Lord Dhanvantari appeared with the nectar pot on Trayodashi of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. Therefore, Dhanvantari deity is worshiped on Dhanteras.
