Women’s Hockey Olympic Qualifier: The Indian women’s hockey team faced the Italian team on Tuesday in the FIH Women’s Olympic Qualifier. In this match, the Indian team won one-sidedly and defeated Italy 5-1. With this victory, the Indian women’s hockey team has confirmed its place in the semi-finals. Now a win will give the Indian team entry into the Olympics.
Great victory of Indian women’s hockey team
Udita Duhan scored two goals in her 100th international match as India defeated Italy 5-1 to reach the semi-finals of the FIH Women’s Olympic Qualifier and take strong steps towards booking a ticket to Paris. Udita (1st and 55th minutes), Deepika (41st), Salima Tete (45th) and Navneet Kaur (53rd) scored for India. Italy’s only goal was scored by Machin Camilla from a penalty corner in the 60th minute.
Indian team’s second victory
The Indian team thus stood second after America in Pool B with six points from two wins. The US won all three. India will face Pool A topper Germany while USA will face Japan in the semi-finals on Thursday. The top three teams in the competition will qualify for the Paris Olympics. After losing to America in the first match, the Indian team once again performed well and maintained control from the beginning to the end of the match. Like the last match, the Indian team made a good start this time too and took the lead in the first minute itself. India got a penalty corner in the first minute itself, which Udita made no mistake in converting.
Strong performance by the Indian team in the second half
Italy got a penalty corner shortly before the end of the first quarter but could not take advantage of it. India got another penalty corner in the second minute of the second quarter but this time Udita could not score the goal. India was leading 1-0 till half time. The Indian team maintained the pressure even after this and soon got the third penalty corner but Monica failed to stop Salima Tete’s push. Due to the mistake of Italian goalkeeper Caruso, India got a penalty stroke on which Deepika scored and made the score 2-0. Salima put India in a strong position by scoring a field goal just before the end of the third quarter. Navneet Kaur scored India’s fourth goal seven minutes before the last hooter, while two minutes later Udita scored from a penalty corner.
