Washington: After the fractured mandate in Pakistan, the way is now almost clear for the formation of a coalition government, but American lawmakers have raised their voice for not recognizing this government. American lawmakers say that the new government in Pakistan should not recognize America yet. A group of influential lawmakers from the ruling Democratic Party in America have written a letter to President Joe Biden citing ‘strong evidence’ of rigging in the recent elections in Pakistan. The group demanded in its letter that the new government of Pakistan should not be recognized until a transparent and credible investigation is conducted in this regard.

Muslim MPs are also included in this group. There have been allegations of widespread rigging in the general elections held on February 8 in Pakistan. There was a fractured mandate in the election results. Independent candidates backed by jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party won more than 90 seats in the 266-member National Assembly. Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s PML-N won 75 seats and former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto’s Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) won 54 seats. Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan won 17 seats.

Wrote letter to President Biden for this reason

In a joint letter to President Biden and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, lawmakers have expressed concern over rigging before and after voting in Pakistan’s recent parliamentary elections. He has urged the US Congress to withhold recognition of Pakistan’s new government until a transparent and credible investigation into election interference is conducted. The US lawmakers said, “Given the strong evidence that the election was rigged, we urge you to wait for a thorough, transparent and credible investigation before recognizing Pakistan’s new government.” , “Without taking this necessary step, you risk supporting the undemocratic behavior of Pakistani officials and could undermine the democratic will of the Pakistani people.” The letter has also been signed by Indian-origin Congress member Pramila Jaipal.
