Jakarta: Indonesia’s Java island has once again been shaken by strong earthquakes. A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia’s Java island on Friday, the United States Geological Survey said, with tremors felt in the capital Jakarta and residents of another city forced to flee their homes. The USGS said the quake had a depth of about eight kilometers (five miles), and it struck off the northern coast of Java island near Bawan Island at about 3:52 p.m. local time.
So far, there is no immediate report of any damage or injury in this earthquake. No tsunami warning has been issued by local authorities. Let us tell you that the earthquake was felt more intensely in East Java province, which also includes the major city Surabaya. “I was at home when the earthquake struck. The shock destabilized us,” said AFP journalist Ulyanas André. “I and my family ran out of the house and our neighbors also ran out. The shock lasted for more than a minute while we were outside.”

Indonesia, a vast archipelagic nation, experiences frequent earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, an arc of intense seismic activity. Here tectonic plates collide, extending from Japan to Southeast Asia and the Pacific Basin. A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Sulawesi island in January 2021, killing more than 100 people and leaving thousands homeless. In 2018, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake in Palu, Sulawesi and the subsequent tsunami killed more than 2,200 people. Earlier in 2004, a 9.1 magnitude earthquake struck Aceh province, causing a tsunami and killing more than 170,000 people in Indonesia.
