Jakarta: Indonesia presidential election Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto has claimed victory on the basis of unofficial figures. He said that he had won the Indonesian presidential election. However, it has not been officially announced yet. Let us tell you that Initial and unofficial counts on Wednesday also show Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto getting a huge lead. From the very beginning it seemed that the former general could easily succeed in winning the country’s highest post. Now by claiming his own victory, he has infused new enthusiasm into Indonesia.

Subianto, 72, had presented himself as the successor to popular and current President Joko Widodo. Voting took place without any major problems across the archipelago on Wednesday afternoon. Preliminary and unofficial results were expected later in the day from quick-count centers certified by the Election Commission. The official and final results will come in about a month. In pre-election polls, Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto was considered a strong contender for the presidency and was the only candidate with ties to Suharto’s regime. Prabowo was the commander of the special forces at that time and has been accused of human rights violations, which he vehemently denies.

These leaders are also in the race

Anies Baswidan and Ganjar Pranowo, two former Indonesian provincial governors, are also in the race to succeed popular President Joko Widodo. Widodo is serving his second and final term. Widodo’s rise from a riverside slum to the country’s presidency has demonstrated the vibrancy of his Southeast Asian country’s democracy in a region often ruled by authoritarian rule. Indonesia’s choice holds immense significance for India as well as the US and China, as the archipelagic nation has a huge domestic market, natural resources such as nickel and palm oil. Indonesia also wields strong diplomatic influence with its Southeast Asian neighbours.

How are relations with India

Indonesia’s current President Joko Widodo has very good relations with PM Modi and India. protectMinister Prabowo Subianto is Joko Widode’s successor and close friend. In such a situation, after his victory, there is a possibility of close relations with India in future also. Voting in the vast archipelago of 17,000 islands with a population of about 27 crore is a Herculean task, with ballot boxes and ballots transported by boats, motorcycles, horses and, in some more remote locations, on foot. According to preliminary and unofficial counting data conducted by the election agency ‘Kompas Search and Development’, Subyanto has received 58 percent of the 80 percent votes cast at the polling stations. Subianto will need more than 50 percent of the total votes and at least 20 percent in each province of the country to win the election over his rivals Anis Basvidan and Ganjar Pranowo. (AP)
