Karachi: Pakistan’s troubled Balochistan has got a new Chief Minister. In a very dramatic manner, apart from just one name, no one else came forward in the candidature of the candidates for the post of Chief Minister. In such a situation, Balochistan has got the Chief Minister unopposed. This is the same troubled Balochistan, where even before the elections were held in Pakistan on February 8, several bomb blasts took place and more than half a dozen people were killed. It is being told that Sarfaraz Bugti of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) was elected unopposed as the new Chief Minister of the troubled Balochistan province on Saturday.

Bugti had resigned from the post of acting Home Minister in the interim government to contest the provincial assembly elections on a PPP ticket in the general elections held on February 8. Bugti had submitted his nomination papers to Assembly Secretary Tahir Shah on Friday. He also has the support of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). No other candidate filed nomination papers till 5 pm on Friday evening after which Bugti was declared the winner unopposed.

Bugti will face a tough challenge

Bugti will face a tough challenge as the new chief minister as the province is often hit by terrorism and separatist violence. After the general elections held on February 8, PPP emerged as the largest party in Balochistan and formed a coalition government in the province with PML-N and Baloch Awami Party. Jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan was also the Information Minister of Balochistan from 2018 to 2022 in the government led by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). (Language)
