Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan could not contest elections himself while in jail, nor was his dream of coming back to power and becoming the Prime Minister fulfilled, but while in jail, he has formed his government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa of Pakistan. Lee Amin Gandapura has been elected as the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from Imran’s party. Ali Amin Gandapura, a candidate supported by jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party, was on Friday elected chief minister of the restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Newly elected Speaker of the Provincial Assembly Babar Salim Swati presided over the session of the House. He was elected president on Thursday. In the 106-member Khyber Pakhtunkhwa House, Gandapura, a candidate supported by Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), got 90 votes while his rival Dr Ibadullah Khan of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) got only 16 votes. Gandapura was supported by Sunni Ittehad Council members while Ibadullah was supported by Pakistan Peoples Party and Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf Parliamentarians (PTI-P). PTI-P is a breakaway faction of Khan’s party.

Imran had missed majority in the National Assembly

The candidates of Imran Khan’s party PTI had contested the elections as an independent candidate while he was in jail and after being stripped of his election symbol. Despite this, he won 93 seats. The court did not allow Imran to become a participant in this election. Despite this, his party’s candidates won the maximum number of seats.
