Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Congress unit chief Pratibha Singh said on Tuesday that Congress leader Sonia Gandhi or Priyanka will contest from the Rajya Sabha seat of the state, which is falling vacant after the end of the six-year term of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president JP Nadda on April 2. Gandhi Vadra can be elected. When asked about sending names from the state, Pratibha Singh said, “We will discuss the matter with senior Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi and if they are interested then they can be selected from this seat.”

Priyanka Gandhi is not an MP from anywhere right now

Sonia Gandhi had contested the 2019 general elections from Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituency while Priyanka Gandhi is neither a Lok Sabha MP nor a member of the Rajya Sabha. “If they want, Sonia Gandhi or Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s name can be considered,” Pratibha Singh told reporters here in response to a question at an event organized to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 76th death anniversary.

Congress is in government in Himachal Pradesh

After the announcement of election schedule for 56 Rajya Sabha seats including one seat in Himachal Pradesh, the Congress party has started the search (for candidates). Congress has 40 seats in the 68-member state assembly. The Rajya Sabha seat is falling vacant on April 2 after the end of the six-year tenure of Nadda, who was elected in 2018 after the BJP returned to power in the state. Voting for this lone seat in the state will be held next month during the budget session of the state assembly (February 14 to 29) and the Congress candidate is certain to win. At present, all three Rajya Sabha seats of the state are with BJP. Apart from Nadda, the two other Rajya Sabha members from the state are Indu Goswami and Sikandar Kumar.
