Nagaland Formation Day 2023

Nagaland celebrates its Formation Day every year on 1 December. On this day Nagaland joined as a state of India. Nagaland was formally inaugurated as the 16th state of the Indian Union on December 1, 1963. If we talk about this border, then Nagaland shares its borders with Assam in the west, Myanmar or Burma in the east, Arunachal Pradesh in the north, Manipur and some parts of Assam in the south. On this occasion today the Prime Minister has congratulated the people of the state.

PM congratulated

PM Narendra Modi tweeted greetings to the people of Nagaland on the state’s foundation day. “The state’s fascinating history, colorful festivals and cordial people are greatly appreciated. May this day reinforce Nagaland’s journey towards development and success,” the PM wrote in a tweet.

Why is this day special?

This day is special in the state of Nagaland because on this day 14 tribes of the state united and became one group in politics. At that time, the Naga people wanted to be free from the British rule for a long time and for this they struggled for a long time and then they got this freedom. This gave them their demand (land) as well as the Government of India granting them the status of a state through the Nagaland State Act.

Dispute between people and government

Earlier there was a lot of dispute between the people of Nagaland and the Government of India. Not only this, the British tried to bring all the tribes together under one rule, but they also could not do this because many villages did not follow these orders and they became bent on fighting.

Got statehood long after independence

In the year 1961, a law named Nagaland Transitional Provisions Regulation was implemented in the region. According to this law, a group of 45 people will be selected by the tribes following their own ways and traditions. Then in the year 1962, the state of Nagaland came into existence after the Nagaland State Act was passed by the Parliament. The Provisional Government in Nagaland was then dissolved on November 30, 1963, and Nagaland was officially inaugurated as a state on December 1, 1963, and Kohima was declared the capital of the state.

When were the first state elections held?

The first elected Nagaland Assembly was constituted in February 1964, following a massive vote in the region in January that year. Although in places like Burma and India there were talks and agreements between Naga insurgents and the government to stop fighting, violence continued. In March 1975, when direct rule was imposed, some leaders of major rebel groups decided to lay down their arms and accept the constitution. But, a small group disagreed and continued fighting against the government.

Work started for peace

During the 1960s, the Nagaland Baptist Church Council began working towards peace, contributing to an end to years of violence, which became more noticeable and positive as early as 1964. Then in 1972, Nagaland Peace Council was established, but it was completely unsuccessful. In 2012, the state leaders urged the Government of India for a political solution to their issues, since then the government has been paying attention to this.
