Foreign Ministry issued advisory
MEA Advisory on Myanmar : There is a tense situation in Myanmar. The Ministry of External Affairs has issued an advisory in this regard. In this advisory, Indian citizens have been advised not to travel to Rakhine province of Myanmar. The Ministry of External Affairs said that Indian citizens currently living in Rakhine State should immediately move from here to some other safe place.
The Ministry of External Affairs said in its advisory, ‘In view of the deteriorating security situation, disruption in telecommunication including landlines and severe shortage of essential commodities, all Indian nationals are advised not to travel to Rakhine State of Myanmar. Indian citizens who are already in Rakhine are advised to leave immediately.
Many areas of Myanmar are in the grip of violence
Rakhine state and many other areas of Myanmar have been in the grip of violence in the past few months. Serious fighting has been going on between armed ethnic groups and the ruling junta since October 2023. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines a junta as “a group of persons controlling the government, especially after a revolutionary seizure of power.” The Myanmar junta seized power in a coup in February 2021 and has refused to recognize those elections. In these, former State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) got a huge victory.
Violence continues near India Myanmar border since November
Violence between the two sides has escalated since November in several cities of Myanmar and areas near the India-Myanmar border. Myanmar shares a 1,640-km long border with several northeastern states, including Nagaland and Manipur.
Infiltrators started entering India to avoid attacks
Myanmar’s military has been carrying out airstrikes against its opponents and those carrying out armed struggle against the ruling regime. There have also been several instances when Myanmar soldiers have crossed into India to protect themselves from attacks by armed ethnic minorities.
