Process of appointment of new Election Commissioner begins, PM Modi will hold the first meeting today – India TV Hindi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair the first meeting today to appoint the new Election Commissioner. Anoop Chandra Pandey’s tenure as Election Commissioner of India ends with his retirement on 15 February. This meeting of PM Modi will be organized under the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023.

Meeting will be held at PM residence

In this meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will discuss with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Choudhary for the appointment of a new Election Commissioner in place of Election Commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey. It is being told that Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Choudhary can attend the meeting to be held at the PM’s residential office at 7.30 pm.

Name will be sent to the President

The new Election Commissioner will be appointed by the Prime Minister and a Union Minister nominated by him and the Leader of the Opposition or the leader of the largest opposition party in the Lok Sabha. The name of the selected officer will be sent to the President. On the recommendation of the selection committee, the President will give his final approval to the appointment of the new Election Commissioner.

What is the new rule for the appointment of Election Commissioner?

Let us tell you that two committees are involved in the selection process. A three-member selection committee headed by the Prime Minister and a three-member search committee headed by the Law Minister and two secretary-level officers. The search committee recommends five names. The recommendation of the search committee will be discussed by a three-member selection committee headed by the Prime Minister. The committee headed by the PM has the power to select election commissioners from outside the list also. After the final name is approved, it will be sent to the President for approval.
